You know those recurring sketches on Saturday Night Live that start off pretty good until they repeat the formula over and over again and eventually lose all steam completely? I cannot say the same about any recurring sketches in Key & Peele.Ĭase in point, these pop-culture obsessed valets for a fancy hotel played by Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele. You can always rely on Key & Peele for both laughs and thrills and this is my favorite example of both. Clive finds the idea of speaking to a puppet utterly ridiculous, until his conversation with Little Homie takes a dark turn.Īs I said before, Little Homie quickly turns into a surprisingly unnerving experience as it plays out, and the punchline, as easy as it may be to predict in retrospect, is executed brilliantly. What gave it away was how in any Key & Peele sketch that would incorporate elements of horror, it kept up with its serious tone until the punchline came, just like in this surprisingly unnerving sketch.įormer convict Clive “Double Down” Ruggins (Keegan-Michael Key) thinks he is going in for a normal first visit with his parole officer, Daniel Tate (Jordan Peele), until he discovers that Tate still uses a conversational method from his days working for the juvenile corrections system: a puppet named Little Homie. The movie is the second-most successful Spider-Man film and was the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2017.I always had a feeling that Jordan Peele would make a great horror filmmaker even before the release of his 2017 Academy Award-winning thriller Get Out. The blend of superhero action and coming of age comedy reminiscent of films by John Hughes worked in Homecoming's favor. Homecoming wasn't only different from previous Spider-Man movies but also other MCU films too. Take use of this exchange for example, when Key is assigned Spider-Man: Homecoming. Why this moment is integral to the meme is because it represents uncertainty - where you're not quite sure about something but ultimately you give it a pass of approval. In the sketch, Peele jokingly acknowledges Key with "Afternoon my octoroon" before embracing him. Arguably the best part of each meme though was seeing how each one handled the standout moment of the sketch - when Peele encounters a supporter (portrayed by Key) who is one-eighth black. From choosing what the topic would be and assigning the right item to each person to actually editing them into the video, the meme is a great example of how creative meme culture can be. What makes the Key & Peele handshake meme the most notable is that every recreation took some time to do. “Appreciate an honest and vulnerable meme.” - Jordan Peele Peele) The sketch resurfaced as a meme in late September when Twitter user assigned films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to the supporters. Hilarity ensues as Peele happily hugs his black fans - and even cradles a supporter's baby - but remains formal with his white fans, offering nothing more than stern handshakes.Ĭomedy Central describes the sketch as follows: "President Obama is introduced to a group of onlookers after giving a speech, but not everyone receives the same treatment." The meme stems from a 2014 sketch from Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key's comedy series Key & Peele titled "Obama Meet & Greet." Peele, as Obama, meets a handful of black and white supporters, notably favoring the former over the latter. October gave us countless memorable memes but the best one made its debut earlier in the month - the Key & Peele handshake meme. But until then, here's the latest edition of "Memes Rule Everything Around Me." In the foreseeable future, we'll have artists and figures within the Okayplayer family speak on their favorite black memes of the moment too. Source: YouTube/Comedy Central Last month Okayplayer debuted its new franchise series, " Memes Rule Everything Around Me." The series will be exploring some of the most popular memes currently dominating the internet.
